THE LONG BETRAYAL: 1877 TO NOW
The Democratic and Republican parties were both born in the age of American slavery. Their origins are soaked in its compromise. And when the moment of reckoning arrived — when Reconstruction offered Black Americans a genuine foothold in this republic — both parties agreed, in the corrupt Compromise of 1877, to end it. Federal troops were withdrawn from the South. Black citizens were left unprotected. The Ku Klux Klan rose in that vacuum. This was not an accident. It was a transaction.
One hundred and forty-eight years have passed. Study what the Democratic Party has delivered in that time. Today, they have surrendered the House, the Senate, and the Oval Office. The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade and gutted the Voting Rights Act through rulings in Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. DNC — the legal architecture of Black and Latino political participation, dismantled. ICE moves through Hispanic communities indiscriminately, citizen and migrant alike. And President Biden — whose late decision to seek a second term cleared the path for Trump's return — leaves behind a migrant crisis his own border policies helped engineer.
The Supreme Court has further moved to criminalize the unhoused, while Congress pushes work requirements for SNAP and Medicare against a labor market that cannot absorb them. With economists projecting 100 million jobs eliminated by automation in the coming decade, the political class offers no answer because they serve no one who asks the question.

But a force has entered this arena that the old order did not anticipate.
