The 13th Amendment abolished slavery — except as punishment for a crime. That exception was not an oversight. It was architecture. It was a legal infrastructure for continuing the extraction of Black labor under a different name. The men who wrote it knew exactly what they were writing.
The Compromise of 1877 ended Reconstruction. Federal troops withdrew from the South. Black political power — the kind that had placed Black men in the U.S. Senate, in state legislatures, in sheriff's offices across the South — was systematically dismantled. The negotiators called it a compromise. Our ancestors called it what it was: a betrayal. The historical record calls it the Great Betrayal. We call it the blueprint that every subsequent political arrangement has followed.
One hundred and forty-nine years later, the arrangement has not changed. The players have changed their language. The plantation has changed its branding. But the structure — Black political loyalty without Black political power, Black votes borrowed and invested everywhere except Black wallets — that structure is intact.

WE ARE NOT CONFUSED ABOUT WHO THE ENEMY IS.
The Republican Party is not hiding its intentions. Project 2025 is a written document. The dismantling of DEI is a stated policy. The blocking of Black generals' promotions and the termination of decorated officers is a matter of public record. The effort to strip civil rights enforcement tools from federal agencies is proceeding in plain view. We see it. We name it. We resist it.
But we will not allow that clarity to blind us to what is happening in the other room.
Eric Adams — only the second Black mayor in the history of New York City — reimplemented stop-and-frisk when crime was at a generational low. The Black Democratic Caucus in Sacramento killed reparations after years of negotiations, in the bluest state in America. The same Democratic establishment that built its governing majority on Black and Latino political loyalty is now openly debating, in the words of Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, whether the 2028 nominee should be 'the safest white boy.'
And while 100 million jobs are being erased by artificial intelligence — jobs held disproportionately by Black workers, Latino workers, women, and young people — the Democratic Party has no token. No AI strategy. No economic infrastructure for the communities standing directly in the displacement zone.
